The President of the African Organic Network (AfrONet), Madam Josephine Atangana, has congratulated Dr. Mwatima Juma on being appointed to Tanzania’s agricultural council by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
In a statement, Atangana expressed excitement and pride in Dr. Juma’s appointment, and assured her of AfrONet’s support in her new role.
“Your appointment is a clear indication that your work is strong and that the contribution of the organic agriculture sector is officially recognized,” Atangana said.
Dr. Mwatima, who is also the Chairperson of Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM), will advise on the implementation of the Dakar 2 agricultural initiative.
This appointment is seen as a positive development for the organic agriculture sector in Tanzania and Africa, as it recognizes the important role that sustainable and inclusive agriculture can play in addressing issues such as food security, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
As the head of TOAM, Dr. Mwatima has demonstrated her commitment and expertise in promoting organic agriculture in Tanzania, which has the potential to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, enhance food security and nutrition, and protect the environment.
Her appointment to the agricultural council provides an opportunity to ensure that the voices and needs of organic agriculture stakeholders are heard and integrated into the planning and implementation of Dakar 2.
This can support the development of a more resilient and diversified agriculture sector in Tanzania that benefits both farmers and consumers.
